WOODBINE HEIGHTS BAPTIST CHURCH
Our Collective Covenant
(affirmed November 2012)
In concert with the Spirit who infuses Creation, is the source of ongoing creativity and who dwelt in and with Jesus of Nazareth, we devote ourselves to a covenant together.
How should we live? What is of greatest importance? The Prophet Micah said, “Do justice, love kindness and walk humbly with your God.” Jesus told us and embodies this: Love God with all your being and love your neighbour as yourself.
We embrace the privilege and responsibility of following Jesus and living into His words. We do so together, called to be the church, a gathered community of faith animating the life of the Spirit, bearing good fruit: qualities of love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness and self-control.
We will call out these best qualities of Spirit by gathering regularly for worship, service, study, reflection and friendship. We will provoke one another to love and good deeds, encouraging each other in faith, supporting each other through joy and sorrow, labouring to bear the gift of life for and with each other, the wider community and the world.
We will live responsibly upon the earth, caring for all Creation as God's gift to be tended and shared, not a right to be exploited and abused.
We will give generously, even sacrificially of our resources: material, spiritual, social, relational and financial, to support the ministry and mission of this congregation, chief of which is communicating—by word and deed—love, dignity and hope to all people, regardless of any economic, religious, ethnic, gender, sexual or other human distinctions.
We will also, with humility, constantly welcome all who would join us in our shared life and ministry, including those broken in body, mind or spirit. As God in Christ loves and affirms us, so we love and affirm all who bear and share God's image.
We dare to embrace these words and make them real in our midst. This is our prayer. This is our covenant.
